If you’re seeking a unique adventure off the beaten path, head south to Katingan Kuala in Central Kalimantan. Just off the coast of Pegatan—the district’s capital—you’ll discover two legendary rock formations that have captured the imagination of locals for generations: Batu Mandi and Batu Buaya.
Pegatan itself is a fascinating place. Wedged between two worlds, the town is flanked by the mouth of the mighty Katingan River to the east and the vast Java Sea to the west. Out in these open waters lie Batu Mandi and Batu Buaya—two mysterious rocks rising dramatically in the middle of the sea. Unlike most coastal rocks that hug the shoreline, these ones stand isolated, like natural monuments carved by the ocean.
What Makes Them Special
Batu Mandi resembles the bow of a ship, tall and striking against the horizon. No matter how high the tide rises, the rock never disappears beneath the waves. Locals even say its steps-like ridges resemble a staircase leading into the depths of the sea.
Batu Buaya, on the other hand, takes the shape of a crocodile, adding to the myths and mysteries surrounding these natural landmarks.
Stories whisper of Batu Mandi once being a beautiful princess turned to stone—a tale that adds a touch of folklore to the breathtaking view.
A Different Kind of Beach Day
Forget sunbathing on sandy shores. Here, you can stretch out on warm rocks, enjoy the salty sea breeze, and take in panoramic views of the endless ocean. The waters around these rocks are teeming with life—colorful fish like groupers, clownfish, and countless others dart through the clear blue waves. It’s no wonder the spot has become a paradise for local fishers and an irresistible draw for adventurous visitors.
Getting There
The best time to visit is during calm seas, when the waves are gentle. From Pegatan, you can reach Batu Mandi and Batu Buaya in about an hour by motorboat. Expect to pay around IDR 600,000 for a round-trip charter—a worthwhile price for such a memorable journey. Bring along a fishing rod if you’re keen, as the area is a hotspot for anglers.
Why You’ll Love It
Whether you come for the legends, the fishing, or simply the thrill of standing on rocks in the middle of the sea, Batu Mandi and Batu Buaya promise an adventure like no other. It’s raw, it’s rugged, and it’s the kind of destination that leaves you with stories to tell long after you’ve returned to shore.
